Augustus Egg (1816-63)

As a young man Augustus Egg attended Sass's Art School in Bloomsbury Street, living near-by in University Street. He achieved great success with modern-life and literary genre paintings. He was also sympathetic to the plight of struggling artists and this painting depicts Egg as a fictional starving author in a garret.
