In the 19th century, artists were still trained by direct study of classical sculpture. Entry to the Royal Academy schools depended on drawing skills usually gained by drawing the Townley or Elgin Marbles at the British Museum. Newman Street was near the Museum and the Marylebone artists frequently drew there. This view shows a young artist practising drawing 'after the antique'.
