In 1774, the American
painter Benjamin West was the first artist to settle in Newman
Street. He converted a simple town house into a studio and exhibition
gallery. As 'History Painter to the King', West needed space for
his canvases, models and his collection of Old Master paintings.
After his death, his sons opened 'West's Historic Gallery' to
fee-paying visitors as a means of profiting from their father's
legacy.
