This bust was carved by John Flaxman, the first Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy. Flaxman settled in Buckingham Street in 1794 following a trip to Rome to study antique sculpture. On his return Flaxman developed a lucrative trade in funeral monuments, many of which combined classical simplicity with the new fashion for sentiment.
