John Russell (1745-1806)

John Russell specialised in sentimental pastel drawings like this. He moved to 21 Newman Street in 1790, the year he was appointed to the Royal Academy. As a strict Methodist, he didn't enjoy the company of fellow artists but shared a passion for astronomy with the sculptor John Bacon. Science and natural philosophy were great interests among Newman Street artists in the early 19th century.
