Leigh's and Heatherley's Art School

Unhappy with the Government School of Arts and Design, recently founded at Somerset House, James Matthew Leigh founded a fee-paying art school at 79 Newman Street in 1845. After his death T. J. Heatherley took over as Director. The School was forward-looking, particularly in admitting male and female students to life classes, and was known for its relaxed teaching and high student morale.
