Artist's suppliers or 'colourmen' were traditionally located in central London where they manufactured and sold paints. Artists would stock up on supplies which freed them the need to mix their own paint. The range and stability of pigments were improved by the mid 19th century due to the discovery of new chemical elements and the introduction of paint in collapsible tubes.
