Looking for a house to accommodate his family and studio, the illustrator and history painter Thomas Stothard moved to Newman Street in 1794. This painting is one of the first depictions of an English artist in a realistic studio. Stothard is surrounded by his tools and props in the room that he had adapted as his painting room.
