By the late 1880s Chelsea was a magnet for young artists, many living in communal studios. This supportive community led to the foundation of the Chelsea Arts Club in 1891 on the King's Road which provided a place to socialise and a life-class and sketching-group. Despite offering some professional support, the club never lost its reputation for smoke-filled nights of drink and conversation.
