The American Whistler came to Chelsea in 1862 attracted by its picturesque potential. He was a consummate showman with a reputation as a wit and dandy. The view from his Lindsey Row house lent itself well to his art. The effects of mist and fog over the water inspired Whistler as he employed Japanese ideas of simplicity of design in capturing their ephemeral effects.
