From 1878, builder John Brass developed Chelsea's first speculative studio complexes, Trafalgar Studios and Wentworth Studios, creating the Manresa Road artist's colony. The illustrator George Percy Jacomb Hood rented the largest studio and held informal life classes when artists clubbed together to hire a model. He also hosted the first meetings of the New English Art Club in 1886.
