William Morris (1834-96)

Most young artists began their careers as designers but soon left design behind. William Morris saw the applied arts as an end in themselves. From 1877, Kelmscott House, Hammersmith was his base where he set up the Kelmscott Press, printing books that revived the spirit and craft practices of the Middle Ages in the applied arts. Hammersmith, Chelsea and Fulham thus became important locations of the arts and crafts movement in London.
