Like other Camden Town painters, Gilman focused on ordinary scenes as a vehicle for carefully observed painting. The setting of his bedsit at 47 Maple Street inspired Gilman to paint interiors revelling in the mundane. The empty chair may relate to Gilman's passion for Van Gogh who had recently been introduced to English audiences.
