Robert Bevan and his wife Polish artist Stanislawa de Karlowska moved to Belsize Park, near Camden in 1900. Bevan was recruited to the Fitzroy Street Group when Spencer Gore and Harold Gilman spotted his work, and were impressed by his use of colour and his first-hand knowledge of Gauguin, with whom he had worked in Brittany.
