Introduction

Picture of HampsteadHampstead attracted artists in the 1930s for much the same reasons as it had in the 1830s: pleasant views, fresher air and a sense of separation from central London. By the 1930s, the rural village had become a leafy residential suburb. Its residents included intellectuals, writers and a group of fiercely committed modernist artists, Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Their presence turned Hampstead into the headquarters for avant-garde art in England. It also became a refuge for European artists and architects fleeing the Nazi-dominated continent.
