Artists
have been a phenomenon in London's East End over the last 30 years.
Once an area of working-class housing and industry, by the 1960s
dock closures and slum clearance had left the district riddled
with derelict buildings. As the value of these properties slumped,
so they began to attract artists in search of cheap studio space.
The East End now houses thousands of artists, dealers, gallery
owners and art students, the largest concentration of artistic
activity in Europe.
