Acme Studios, the largest provider of artists' accommodation in the UK, was founded in 1972 by artists to provide low-cost working and living space. Their first properties were two derelict shops in Bow. Within two years they were helping over 300 artists and, in 1975, started taking over former industrial buildings to provide non-residential studios.
