Ellingfort Road in Hackney is largely inhabited by artists. By 1994 the street was threatened by Hackney Council who wished to replace houses with industrial units. Artist, Tom Hunter, himself a resident, made 'The Ghetto' to document the community and to present the residents in a way that countered the Council's dismissal of them as social undesirables. The houses have subsequently been reprieved and are being refurbished.
