Souvenir biscuit tin
In
1950, aware of manufacturers' growing interest in producing souvenirs
to commemorate the Festival, a Souvenir Committee was formed to vet
those products eligible for sale at Festival sites. For inclusion in
the stock list the souvenir had to be of a ‘good standard of design
and workmanship’.
This copper plate and enamel biscuit tin is typical of many commemorative
goods. Far from being original in design, it simply incorporates the
emblem of the Festival: the Festival Star. Designed by Abram Games,
the Whitechapel born graphic artist, the Star became synonymous with
the Festival, appearing on an enormous range of official and unofficial
products.
