The South Bank Exhibition,
from the Viewing Tower
Postcard, published by Valentine and Sons
An
area of land stretching from County Hall to Waterloo Bridge was chosen
as the Festival’s principal exhibition site. Heavily blitzed during
the war, the site was quickly cleared and, with land reclaimed from
the Thames, an exhibition space of 27 acres was created. The redevelopment
was not accepted uncritically. Many critics argued that labour and
materials would be better used in rebuilding homes and services devastated
during the war.
This postcard is one of a series of 6 images of the South Bank exhibition,
published by Valentine and officially authorised by the Festival Committee.
