The Collection of Romilly McAlpine
7 April to 25 June 2000

Vivienne Westwood: the collection of Romilly McAlpine has on show a stunning collection of evening dresses, daywear, separates and accessories bought by Romilly McAlpine, wife of Lord McAlpine, former Treasurer of the Conservative Party.

Here are some of Westwood's most important designs: the transparent Boulle tulle sheath dress, the asymmetrically cut Windy Bettina jacket from the 1996 Storm in a Teacup collection and the shredded tulle feather skirt.

The 36 pastel-coloured costume figures are displayed in a rococo setting of gold, raspberry pink flowers, vivid green grass and blue summer skies. An extraordinary range of accessories and separates tumble out of a floor-to-ceiling chest of drawers in tantalising profusion. A film and video screens show the garments on the catwalk and key London locations associated with the designer, while Romilly McAlpine is shown talking about her admiration for Westwood's work.

The exhibition has been co-curated by design historian Catherine McDermott and Edwina Ehrman the Museum of London's Curator of Costume and Decorative Arts. It has been designed by award winning theatre designer Tim Hatley.

The exhibition has been generously sponsored by Mr & Mrs Rupert Hambro.
