Taking history home with the shopping

Customers in Ridley Road Market in Hackney took their shopping home wrapped up in a bit of history for one weekend in April only. The idea behind the Memory Bags project was a simple one - personal memories from the Museum of London’s oral history collection were printed on carrier bags for distribution at Ridley Road Market. The memories were all about food and were selected by the market stallholders.

Museum of London has been collecting the life stories of Londoners for more than a decade. This project highlights the museum’s interest in London’s present as well as its past. Ridley Road Market is a vibrant and bustling market serving Londoners from a diverse range of communities.
