Mass produced ceramics 1800-2000
In the nineteenth century, Staffordshire became the main location of ceramics production as increasing mechanisation took place. London and other industrial cities became the main markets for the Staffordshire wares. Blue and white printed earthenware was made in many patterns for the home market and for export. Multicolour printing was introduced in the 1840s, enabling attractive coloured ceramics to be made at a low cost.
The Museum of London collection contains a variety of nineteenth and twentieth century ceramics, reflecting the increasing choice and availability of ceramics used in the home for decoration, food preparation and presentation, and for health and hygiene.
