Documentary records of tobacco pipemakers

There are no records of pipemakers for the 16th century, although from the early 17th century a wide variety of documentary sources increasingly give us the names of clay tobacco pipe makers working in London and other centres in the UK to which the industry expanded. An extensive list of pipemakers for London and other areas of the country was published by Adrian Oswald in 1975. This was compiled from a wide range of sources, including the Charters of Incorporation, records of the City Chamberlain's Court, wills and probate inventories, parish registers, trade directories and a variety of legal records involving pipemakers. The list of makers has since expanded greatly through much painstaking documentary research, and continues to grow.

You can browse the list of makers.
