Summary
This site lay over the SE corner of successive Roman fora. Six major Roman phases were identified: Phase 1 comprised the initial occupation of the site, represented by gravel and brickearth surfaces, occupation layers and a small gully. In Phase 2 these features were levelled and an extensive building or buildings with mudbrick walls was constructed. During Phase 3 these were destroyed in the Boudican fire of ad60-1. This was followed in Phase 4 by the construction of gravel and brickearth surfaces with little evidence of associated structures; and subsequently in Phase 5 a series of levelling deposits was laid down which apparently preceded the construction of the walls and floor surfaces of the second forum during Phase 6. In Phase 7 the forum walls were robbed, and this was followed by the construction of the church of St Dionis Backchurch (first mentioned between 1089 and 1108). The foundations of the S aisle and of the SW tower were recorded. See GM95 above.
