Summary
Excavations in 1974-6 revealed, in the W part of the site, four 1st-c ditches perhaps aligned with the N-S Roman road leading to London Bridge (Roman Road 1), and a square wood-lined well which had been burnt in the later 1st c. These were overlaid by later 1st-c floors. To the E, a second complex of late 1st-early 2nd-c ditches was located, into one of which a wooden conduit had been inserted. Several 2nd-c pits and a deposit of 4th-c agricultural soil were recorded at the E limit of the site. A 13th-c tile and chalk structure, probably a cesspit, four 14th-15th-c pits, possibly associated with tanning, two complete 15th-c barrels set into pits, and a brick-lined feature of 17th-c date were also found.
