Summary

Excavation in 1989 exposed extensive refuse pits containing a large quantity of 17th-c pottery. A layer cut by a substantial ragstone and green Reigate stone wall produced the earliest dating evidence on site in the form of pottery of the period 1350-1550. The site was occupied by the London Charterhouse between 1371 and 1537, and the wall and pits appear to relate to occupation by Lord North after the Dissolution. Excavation on the site of the cloister garth in 1990 revealed in situ walls and floor levels of the period, and a large quantity of plain yellow- and black-glazed Flemish floor tiles of the 14th-15th c recovered from robber trenches of the Dissolution period, when the Charterhouse was converted to a residence. A substantial wall of this period, constructed from robbed materials, was found to traverse the site for a distance of more than 50m.
