Summary

Excavation in 1990, within the site of Winchester Palace and adjacent to 12th- and 14th-c timber waterfronts and a later stone riverwall (see NBW90 below), revealed at the SE corner a finely cobbled road surface with limestone kerbing aligned NW-SE and leading towards the slype at the W end of the Great Hall of the palace. It was sealed by a mid-17th-c floor containing building debris. The S side of a substantial stone-built riverwall of 16th-17th-c date was also recorded. (For plan, see WP83: Pickford's Wharf D.)
