Summary
Excavation in 1988 revealed evidence of a millstream known to have existed in the area from the medieval period. The width of the stream appears to have been gradually reduced, wooden drains being guided into it during the 16th and 17th c. Eventually the millstream was confined within a brick culvert fed by inlets, and the area was reclaimed by timber boxing backfilled with rubble.
