Summary
Excavation in 1981 revealed the end of the bath-house, to the N of its supposed site. To the S was a series of cobbled and rough yard surfaces, one of them overlain by a spread of Roman plaster fragments, covering an area of more than 20sq m and found in situ where it had collapsed from a building, evidence for which suggested a timber-framed cob wall construction. To the W of the building were found traces of a second building, other timber structures and a clay-walled oven. In this area was a large ditch running N-S parallel to a shallow beam slot, and related to a late boundary marked by a ditch and a fence or palisade. To the N of the bath-house was a series of post-holes as evidence of further timber buildings. A wide range of Romano-British pottery (one urn containing a cremation) was recovered, in addition to Neolithic-Late Bronze Age material. Little medieval or post-medieval pottery was found. Further work in 1982-3 examined the remainder of the bath-house site, E of which masonry walls and robber trenches provided evidence of the main domestic buildings of the villa. No floor levels survived, but at least two construction phases were distinguished. Further E, a series of post-holes indicated at least one more timber building, while to the S further cobbled surfaces were located. Underlying the main Romano-British structures were numerous prehistoric and early Roman pits and ditches.
