Watching a movie

Short videos on this website have been saved in a format called ‘mpg’. This is the industry standard for videos that you download from a website and then watch on your computer. Simply select the video you want to watch, it should automatically find the right software programme on your computer and then play.

Because you are downloading a large video file onto your computer it can take a few minutes, depending on your modem or network connection. Many players will show the video as it downloads which can be a bit jumpy as it stops and starts. Once you have downloaded the file you can re-start it and will play at normal speed.

You will need a ‘media player’ programme loaded on your computer; common ones are Windows media player and RealOne player for PCs and QuickTime for Macs. If you do not have a media player you can download one:

Download RealOne player

Download Windows media player

Download QuickTime player
QuickTime only plays Macs file formats.

Using the QuickTime virtual reality movie of High Street Londinium

To look around the virtual reality movie you will need a software programme called QuickTime player. If you have this programme on your computer already the movie will open automatically on your screen when you select the link to it.

Once the movie is displayed on your screen, use your mouse to look around – simply click and drag the mouse left to go left, or drag it right to go right. An icon with 4 arrows, or a hand, is used to show you where you are in the image. The faster you drag your mouse, the faster you will see the image move.

Download QuickTime player

Enlarging text

You can change the size that text is displayed on this website, and many others. The exact method varies from browser to browser.

Internet explorer

Select the View menu, and then the Text size option to select the size setting that suits you.

Every website will then display text at this size.

Downloading a pdf

A pdf is a type of electronic file that saves the words and pictures in a document, and also fixes how they are displayed. We have used this format to create family activity sheets, photocards and teachers resources that you can download onto your computer and then print or forward by email.

To use a pdf document you need to have a plug-in called Acrobat reader. This is free piece of software that you can download onto your computer from Adobe, the company who make it.

Download the plug-in now.

Once you have the plug-in on your computer you will be select a link to one of our pdf documents, such as the family activity sheets, and open it. You will be able to save it onto your computer, print it or forward it by email. You will not be able to change it.
