How to use this site

Through investigating six objects, you can discover what life was like for Tudor Londoners.

Use the object buttons at the top of the page to select a theme. This takes you to an introductory page with a personality. The biographical stories provide specific evidence about the lives of individuals related to the selected object. There is a specific question on each person's object designed to help you work as detectives, looking for clues and collecting evidence.

Each personality's page has a link to two others. One page answers the specific question posed and provides more information about the object. The other gives information about a related theme.

Through working with objects in this way, it is hoped you will gain an understanding of how to interpret them as evidence of life in the past. You can see all the objects featured on this site on display at the Museum of London. They are in the Tudor gallery, together with many others from our extensive collection.

Interactive questions

Each personality's page has a question about the featured object. We provide three possible answers and a clue. Look at the picture of the object and think about the question and the clue.

Decide which answer you think is right and then click on it to select it. Then click on the 'Submit your answer' button below to find out if you got it right.

Unusual words and the wordlist

In this site you will find some unusual words, perhaps words that were common in Tudor times that we no longer use, or specialist words that not many people use. These words are bold. If you click on the word it takes you to the wordlist where you will see a definition or explanation on the word.

Use the 'back' button in your browser to go back to the main page. You can check any word in the wordlist whenever you like, just use the link at the top of the page.

Enlarging text

You can change the size that text is displayed on this website, and many others. The exact method varies from browser to browser.

Internet explorer
Select the View menu, and then the Text size option to select the size setting that suits you.

Netscape / Mozilla
Select the View menu, and then use the Text zoom sub-menu to select the size setting that suits you.

Opera
Select the View menu, and then use the Zoom sub-menu to select the size setting that suits you.

Safari
Select the View menu, and then use the 'Make text bigger' or 'Make text smaller' options to increase or decrease the text size.
