Citizenship online teachers package

INTRODUCTION

The Museum of London is a museum of citizenship in action. It charts the history of one of the largest, most complex and most cosmopolitan cities in the world. As it does so, it shows how citizens have organised themselves to improve their lives.

The story of London is not always one of generosity and philanthropy: there is oppression, self-interest and cruelty, too. The story is partly one of protest, struggle and the use of force as marginalised groups have fought to assert themselves. But it is also a story of tolerance and acceptance as those living in London have jostled to carve out their roles as active citizens, co-existing and contributing to (and benefiting from) the prosperity of this great city. This urban narrative provides many opportunities to examine interpretations of the past and enrich the teaching of the history and citizenship curricula in schools.

This online teachers package enables you to discuss citizenship issues with children before, during and after a visit to the Museum. The activities will help children appreciate how citizens shape society and how they themselves can contribute to the development of the city in which they live. Ultimately it is hoped that the activities will help teachers enable children to live richer, more informed and more active lives as future citizens of London.

The citizenship activities in this package are designed to relate closely to the content of National Curriculum Citizenship for Key Stage 2 and complement the QCA schemes of work.
