Proposed plans

With the City in ruins there was an opportunity to rebuild it in a totally different way. People thought the old town had been crowded and dirty. Architects designed new layouts for London that they thought would solve all the problems. But none was ever used. Why not?

It was important that people should move back to London and re-start their businesses as soon as possible to avoid an economic collapse. Sorting out land ownership was very complicated and time-consuming. There was no further time or money for the City government to buy back land from its owners and redistribute it in order to rebuild in a new design. So the old street plan was preserved, with some streets widened and two new streets created.
