This handbill publicises a tree-planting ceremony and rally on 4 December
1999 and a house rebuilding protest on the 5th. The 'Stop the M11 Link'
campaign centred around Wanstead and Leytonstone in east London. It was a
protest against plans by the Department of Transport to build the
Hackney-to-M11 link road.
Save the trees
The campaign sought to save a 300-year-old sweet chestnut tree in the
centre of George Green, Wanstead, from the roadbuilders. Protestors
claimed that building the link road would destroy over 350 homes. Hundreds
of trees would be cut down and communities would be divided.
Campaign lost
Despite their efforts on behalf of their neighbourhood, the campaigners
lost their protest. The link road was completed in 1999 following the
demolition of 400 homes.
