From Antigua to the Mayor's office via Bushwood

by Veronica Georges

My name is Veronica Georges and I have lived in E11 area for the past 27 years. My formative years were spent in Antigua in the Caribbean where I was born. The area that I have lived in is commonly referred to as the Bushwood area. This area is unique as it is completely residential with no shops of any description. We operate a very good Neighbourhood Watch in conjunction with the police and publish a quarterly newspaper in order to inform residents about what is going on locally. The borough is very diverse with varied ethnic groups.

I arrived in the U.K. in 1969 and trained as a general nurse at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. I later went on to train as a midwife at the North Middlesex Hospital in Edmonton and the British Hospital for Mothers and Babies in Woolwich respectively. I have also trained as an ophthalmic nurse and an ophthalmic theatre nurse at Moorfields Eye Hospital and worked as a theatre sister for 7 years. I later trained as a health visitor at Croydon College and qualified in 1986-87.

I have been working in the borough since 1986 as a health visitor and retired in 2005. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the local community especially with mothers and young children.

I have had the privilege of being the first African-Caribbean deputy Mayoress and Mayoress of the borough of Waltham Forest. This has given me the opportunity of meeting various prominent people as well as local communities and organizations. I have played a small part in the local community by becoming a school governor of various schools.
