Wedding dress

Wedding in Plaistow

This white lace dress was worn by Kathleen Clark at her wedding to Trefor Davies in March 1937. It was made especially for her by a friend who was a court dressmaker.

Kathleen Clark

Kathleen Clark was born in Plaistow in July 1908. Before her marriage she worked as a comptometer operator. After their honeymoon she and her husband moved to Derbyshire where they lived happily for 63 years. Kathleen Clark died in January 2000.

Comptometers

A comptometer was a calculating machine that could add up several columns of figures at once. Comptometer operators were hired out to companies to help with their book-keeping. Through her working life, Kathleen Clark worked at one time or another in most of the buildings in the City of London.
