Photograph of house in Bethnal Green by Nigel Henderson. By permission of the artist's estate

Coronation celebrations

This photograph shows a house decorated for the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The house was located near Chisenhale Road in Bethnal Green. Nigel Henderson, a photographer and artist who lived in the area, took the picture.

London celebrates

The entire country celebrated the coronation. The day gave people the opportunity to show their support for the queen and to honour British history and tradition. People all over London decorated their houses and shops with Union Jack flags.

Local photographer

Nigel Henderson started his career as an artist. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London during the 1940s. Later he began to experiment with photography. Between 1949 and 1953, he recorded life in and around Bethnal Green, where he lived at the time.
