In 1876 the Worshipful Company of Grocers, one of the 'Big Five' of the City Livery Companies, founded a school in a corner of Hackney Downs. The School flourished under the second Headmaster, the Revd. Gull and later under Mr W. Jenkyn Thomas (a friend of Lloyd George). Following Thomas' retirement in 1936 Thomas Oscar Balk became Head (until 1952), he had been at school with T.E. Lawrence.
