E6 Beckton, East Ham

There is history

I remember that first gaswork that opened. My father used to come home everyday smelling of sweat and gas. But we were happy, a house to live in and an income coming in, what more could we ask for.

I had two elder brothers Simon and Josh. Simon was the eldest, he was going to be sixteen next year and go with my father to work in the gaswork factory. We were all very happy, we didn't need to keep moving around looking for a place to live in because it was hard for my dad to look for a job, as in the first World War he had injured his left leg, he was always getting angry after that, so we tried to stay out of his way as much as possible.

But I knew it couldn't be possible, us actually living in a permanent place, so it happened, in the Second World War the Beckton gasworks was destroyed, so many people lost their jobs, my dad couldn't go back to fight in the war, but my two brothers did, eventually when the war ended there was only my dad and I left. I soon married a retired soldier, my dad got on very well with him, we suffered losses, but my dad wasn't always in a temper after that.
