In 1784 there was no welfare state to look after ordinary people when they fell ill or found themselves too old to work. Sometimes, a group of people would get together to organise a fund that would support them in times of hardship, with all members paying subscriptions into the fund while they were able to. These groups were known as ‘friendly societies’ and one of them, the Agreeable United Fair Friendly Society, was set up by a group of London women and based near Fetter Lane in what’s now EC4. |

Senate House Library, University of London, holds the handwritten volume containing the Society’s rules and members of the public with an interest in local history are welcome to examine it. The volume contains the rules that governed the society’s meetings and gives details of the payments these women agreed the fund should make if, for example, one of them lost her husband or went blind.
