A fishmonger would have given this brass token to a porter at Billingsgate
fish market in exchange for his work. The tokens represented money and
would later be converted into cash wages. The heart-shaped token is marked
'Grant & May Ltd Billingsgate' - the name of the fishmonger who issued it.
Charles Neal & Son
The token is also marked with the name 'C. Neal'. Charles Neal & Son is a
family business who have specialised in making medals, metal tickets and
manufacturing tools for the past 200 years. During the 1930s, one of the
brothers, Peter Neal, rented premises for the business on High Road in
East Finchley.
