In East End Road facing Squires Lane stands the mansion known as the
Finchley Manor House. The grandson of Sir Thomas Allen built the stately
house in 1723.
The Allens
The Allen family had held the manor for about a century before the
Georgian house was erected. It then remained in their possession until the
early 19th century. After 1830 the buildings were used as a Catholic
School. They now form part of the Sternberg Educational and Cultural
Centre.
Bibsworth Manor
To the rear of the property can be seen the remains of a moat. This was
part of the earlier manor of Bibsworth. This manor is thought to have been
the residence of Michael Tovey, who was Mayor of London from 1247-8. By
1418 the manor had passed to Edward Bibsworth from whom it obtained its
name. It was the largest manor in the parish and included fishponds that
can still be seen on the north side of East End Road.
