This special edition of the Hornsey Journal is dated 13 May 1926. It gives
details of the latest news on the General Strike which began on 1 May and
lasted for ten days. The strike was called by the Trades Union Congress to
support the coal miners who were suffering a cut in their pay.
All workers on strike
It was an all-out strike. All the different trade workers throughout
London refused to go to work. This affected the running of many different
services including public transport and printing. However, people who
disagreed with the strike volunteered to do the work instead.
Growth of the Hornsey Journal
The Hornsey Journal was originally known as the Hornsey and Finsbury Park
Journal. It was established in 1881. Their current offices are on
Tottenham Lane, but at one time they also had premises on Fleet Street.
Fleet Street was the home of the major national newspapers for most of the
20th century.
