This hoard of bronze axe-heads was found on a building site in Disraeli
Road, Park Royal. The axe-heads can be dated to around 1000-800 bc.
So many in one place?
The hoard had been buried in a small pit. It may have been hidden to keep
it safe in a time of danger. Or it may have been intended as a gift to the
gods or to the ancestors of those who buried it.
Valuable tools
Axe-heads such as these were cast in large numbers and were valuable
objects. They were attached to wooden hafts or handles and used in
carpentry. The hoard is currently on display in the Museum of London's
London before London gallery, which tells the story of London for many
thousands of years before the Romans arrived.
