This photograph by Henry Grant is of a demonstration by members of the
Jewish community in Golders Green in 1985. They are protesting the
vandalism of Jewish graves in Tiberias, Israel.
Jewish community in London
Thousands of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe had settled in east
London in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After the Second World
War, they began to move from the overcrowded East End to the more spacious
suburbs of north-west London. Today the areas of Golders Green and Temple
Fortune, and those further north in Hendon and Edgware, have large Jewish
communities. There are many shops and restaurants selling kosher food as
well as synagogues, Jewish schools and Jewish welfare services to serve
the community's needs.
