Coming to Kentish Town

by Maria Conteh-Kamara

I first came to London when I was very young and we lived in Kentish town; Weedington Road, London, NW5. I thought it was dismal. You go inside one way and you go out the same door. When I was home in West Africa, Sierra Leone, there were many doors to our house.

The first winter in England was terrible and the snow was so much and you couldn’t go outside because the streets were frozen. I was scared. It was exciting too but it was also frightening. In those days the fog was terrible too and you cant see for 50 yards the other person in front of you.

I moved to Halifax when I was a teenager.
