Origins of the famous store
Frank Winfield Woolworth founded his first store in the United States in
1879. In 1909, the first British store opened in Liverpool. The first
London branch followed shortly after.
The shops were a huge success and continued to grow in popularity during
the 1920s and 1930s. By 1950, there were a total of 762 stores in the UK.
Woolworths became known for its famous slogan 'Nothing in these stores
over sixpence'.
