My working life

My first job was as a tea boy at Mark Browns Wharf, 1952-3. They would unload what was known as overside into barges. What was known as delivery went from the same hold and into lorries. We used to unload the barges that went upriver. I got sacked from Mark Browns because we went onto the coal storage roof which was made out of glass and cracked it - that was the end of Mark Browns.

My relations still worked there and he got me another job on the docks, Service Wharf, Bankside, assisting the dockers. I shouldnt have been because you had to be 21 or over before you could get your registration.

I went into the army and did my service and then came out and got my card. I then went back to Service Wharves.
