Free Ferry

by Douglas Mcleod

The Woolwich Free Ferry in the 1950s was a major attraction to us children.

You could wander below deck and see the magnificently shiny machinery in motion or observe the docking on deck anticipating the final bump as the ferry locked itself into position. The short ‘sea voyage’ fed the imagination. North of the river the land was definitely foreign and the return journey was like coming back to your own country after a while abroad.

Woolwich market itself was always an exciting place especially at Christmas.

There was a pie and eel shop I recall, I think called Manzes, and this was chiefly of interest to us as children because the proprietor would cut the heads off of live eels in the window.

There was a good book shop there too and I remember buying a Dennis Wheatley book called the ‘Devil Rides Out’ in about 1960.
